Why do I need an Editor?

Updated: Mar 19

If you are anything like I was when I first started my journey as a self-published author, you are asking this question right now.

We all know there are tools like Grammarly that can ensure we don't make any glaring errors, so why spend money on an editor?

The answer is simple. Editors do so much more than just fix the occasional error in grammar or spelling.

A copy editor takes the first draft of your book and, in addition to the basics, also goes through it from the top down to:

  • Ensure everything in it is reader-friendly and perfectly imparts your vision for the book accurately and successfully.

  • Make sure that every line, paragraph, and chapter maintains the tone of voice you want in your work.

  • Makes sure the story's pacing and flow are maximized to ensure the best final book.

  • Ensure that spellings/facts/characters/events all remain consistent throughout.

From sentence structure to paragraph placement, the editor looks at it all.

When we go through the process of editing a work, it's done with a singular task in mind: To make your work shine.

If you've ever been reading a great book or article and hit a bit of an awkward sentence or a weird turn of phrase, you have felt that jolt. It takes you out of what you are reading.

An editor ensures that doesn't happen.
